Auburn University has announced that in the fall semester of 2017, its College of Agriculture will begin offering a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Science.

Its Department of Horticulture will administer the degree program, according to the school. Students interested in a general agriculture degree to prepare for a career in the industry are encouraged to enroll.

“We’re excited about the opportunities this Agricultural Science degree will give students in both the College of Agriculture and the College of Education,” said Amy Wright, Auburn agriculture’s associate dean for instruction. “Agriculture students who enroll in the program can tailor their degrees by selecting supporting courses that focus on dimensions of agriculture that interest them most.”

The major was developed in response to the “growing demand” for skilled workers within agriculture-related industries, according to the university. Students who receive a Bachelor of Science in the program will be able to double-major in Agriscience Education.

“For education students, the State Department of Education requires all teacher preparation programs be completed as a double major with a corresponding science program,” Wright continued. “The Agricultural Science major now provides that option and offers an excellent foundation for anyone working toward a teaching career in ag education.”

Courses in topics such as horticulture, crop and soil science, animal sciences, agribusiness, fisheries, and aquaculture make up the degree program.
