The 2013 Urban Agriculture Expo will be held April 20, 2013, at the Sabathani Community Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with an aim to educate attendees on the growing urban farming market. This is according to the 2013 Urban Ag. Expo brochure.

The event will focus on growing food, especially as an enterprise, which can supplement income or become a full-time endeavor, according to the brochure. Visitors will be able to interact with vendors who support urban farming, including insight into financial assistance, educational opportunities, and the chance to meet suppliers.

The event is just one of many indications that urban agriculture is on the rise across America. Fifteen percent of the world’s food is now grown in urban areas, and recent survey results show 57% of urban agriculture practitioners are using its products “to a great extent” as a supplement to household foods. Eighty-two percent of survey respondents use urban agriculture “somewhat” or “to a great extent” as a means to bring in cash income.

According to the survey results, “Many cities and towns are now looking at how they can be more sustainable, and promoting urban agriculture is one step toward a goal of increased overall sustainability. Urban agriculture also fits with increasing interest in enhancing and developing food systems that can contribute to a community’s overall economic, social, environmental, and nutritional development.”

The growing urban agriculture industry will be on display at the 2013 Urban Agriculture Expo, where attendees will have the opportunity to gather information from vendors on all aspects of urban farming.
