This weekend history buffs and farm antiquarians will be descending on the Dollinger family farm in Channahon, Illinois for the 47th annual Antique Tractor Steam & Gas Show.

Put on by the Will County Threshermen's Association, the show is a family educational event that seeks to demonstrate old farming techniques including wheat threshing and straw baling.

The association's secretary, Terry Welshans of Homer Glen, recalls riding around on his uncle's John Deere tractor in Iowa back in 1963. After looking around at fairs and online, he finally bought himself a used John Deere tractor to fix up in 1998.

It was a 1941 John Deere Model B tractor, with plenty of rusted bolts and some busted parts that would need to be replaced with hard work and patience.

"I like to restore the old equipment back to working order," Welshans told the Chicago Tribune.

Welshans said his favorite projects are "basket cases" because they were given up for dead by the previous owners.

"It gives me a lot of pleasure to get a machine like that back to running condition or back to life," he said.
