Farm equipment maker John Deere was recently recognized for its support of employees who are in the Reserves or National Guard.

The Iowa Freedom Award is given to companies who provide the structure to allow employees to serve in these branches of the military. The John Deere Des Moines Works in Ankeny was given the honor by Governor Chet Culver.

Culver noted that support from communities and families is important, but so is that of the companies that hold positions for servicemembers who have to leave and perform their duties.

"Today, we're here to offer our thanks to four Iowa employers who have gone out of their way to support our troops and their families," Culver said during a ceremony in Des Moines.

The Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve is the federal agency that works secure support from employers for members of the Reserve and National Guard. It was established in 1972 and is under the supervision of the U.S. Department of Defense.

In addition to the rewards, Culver also signed a declaration in honor of ESGR.
