John Deere is continuing to push precision agriculture forward with new updates to its See & Spray technology, designed to help farmers apply herbicides more efficiently in the field.
The latest enhancements are designed to support operations of all sizes, helping farmers manage rising input costs, tighter application windows, and increasing weed pressure with greater confidence and flexibility at any time of day throughout the season.
What’s New with See & Spray Gen 2
John Deere’s updated See & Spray system builds on its existing precision spraying platform, using advanced camera and machine learning technology to distinguish crops from weeds in real time.
Key updates include:
- Introduction of See & Scout, launching in 2027, to deliver field insights, including weed pressure and stand count (starting in corn), at no additional cost
- Expanded crop compatibility from corn, soybeans and cotton to barley, canola, edible beans, peanuts, milo, sugar beets and wheat for the Gen 2 system. Additionally, all new crop models, sans edible beans, have been approved for backwards compatibility to existing See & Spray Premium and Ultimate machines
- New Variable Rate functionality that can measure living biomass to vary the application rate based on rate and biomass thresholds set by the operator
These updates are designed to move See & Spray beyond targeted application, giving operators better insight into field conditions with every pass.
How the Technology Works
See & Spray uses 36 cameras mounted on the sprayer boom to scan fields as the sprayer completes its application.
The system processes images in real time, identifying weeds and triggering individual nozzles to apply herbicide only where needed. This targeted approach allows for more efficient use of inputs while maintaining effective weed control.
Why It Matters for Farmers
Precision application continues to be a major focus for growers looking to manage costs and improve efficiency. With real-time weed detection and treatment, farmers gain the flexibility to adapt weed control strategies by crop and field conditions, maintaining effective weed control while optimizing input use and protecting profitability and supporting long-term agronomic outcomes.
