On the Road with Machinery Pete takes us to Bodensteiner Implement Co., in Elkader, Iowa. Farmers in Elkader experienced their fair share of weather-related challenges when it came to producing their crops in 2017. The lack of rainfall in August and September had many of them concerned about the success of their crop. Despite these challenging conditions, corn yields were above 200 bushels per acre.

John Deere Planters in Demand

Bodensteiner Implement Co. is reaping the benefits of this surprising harvest with demand for equipment such as combines and John Deere planters, which are limited in supply. Farmers who have held out on purchasing new equipment the past several years are re-entering the market out of necessity instead of want. The demand for new machinery is creating a strong market-price, according to Machinery Pete.

In November and December, tractors in good condition with low hours sold for some of the highest prices of 2017. Combines are also seeing higher values but it’s the planters that are in the most demand. In prior years, there was an abundance of planters on the market but dealers have worked their inventory down and are now seeing the value of planters increase again. For farmers, the planter is the key to the rest of their operation and newer technology is enticing to those looking to buy.

One Iowa farmer says the best part of his harvest in 2017 was just watching his crops grow and reaping the benefits. Many are hopeful for 2018 and the demand for planters will likely continue.
